Rupununi floor waters receding – Regional Chairman

THE flooding in the Rupununi is no longer a major concern as waters are receding and the people who were placed in the shelter are returning to their homes, said Regional Chairman for Region Nine, Mr. Bryan Allicock.

Over the weekend a team from the Civil Defence Commission flew to different parts of the region to conduct an assessment. “Colonel Craig and his team flew in yesterday to assess the affected areas. The water is receding, so as of right now our main focus is to get the necessary equipment to repair damage,” Mr. Allicock said.
He added that he has also received reports that the Amazon is dry so they are not expecting any overflow into the region.

Last year around this time the region experienced a considerable amount of flooding and at least 20,000 people across Region Nine (Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo) were affected by the heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers.
