FORMER Magistrate Chandra Sohan has filed a notice of appeal, following a traffic conviction imposed by Magistrate Renita Singh at the Albion Court.
In the notice filed by attorney-at- law Mursulene Bacchus, it was requested that the decision of Magistrate Renita Singh, be reversed and\ or set aside, or a new hearing be ordered.
On June 12, last, Magistrate Renita Singh ordered that Sohan pay a fine of $35,000 with an alternative of two weeks’ imprisonment, after he was found guilty of failing to render assistance to an injured person.
The charge stemmed from an accident on August 18, 2017, along the Williamsburg Public Road where pedestrian Dennis Roach sustained injuries.
Police had stated that the former magistrate had collided with the pedestrian while he was under the influence of alcohol, and behind the wheel of PJJ 6060.
Consequently, the police charged Sohan with dangerous driving. On the night in question 51-year-old Sohan of Palmyra Village, Corentyne, was proceeding west along the southern driveway when Dennis Roach allegedly crossed the road into the vehicle.
