IN keeping with the sustainable development goals and Green State Development Strategy, Bartica continues to make significant strides towards becoming the ‘Green Hub’ of Guyana.

The municipality has been engaging a number of local and international partners to mobilise technical and financial support to develop and implement plans and projects in the area of resilience, sustainability and local economic development.

Among the many projects intended to impact the town’s green agenda is an environmental assessment to the tune of $12M which is being funded by the United Nations Environment Programme.
According to a statement issued by the municipality, the study will provide information mainly about waste generation, which will facilitate local policy-making.

It will also serve to strengthen the environmental component of the Municipal Development Plan, currently being prepared with support from the Ministry of Communities.
Meanwhile, through the United Nations Environment Programme, Bartica Mayor Gifford Marshall, along with Roger Rogers of the Ministry of Communities, visited Recife, Brazil to observe Recife’s local government and civil society organisations and the development of the city.

During the visit which ran from June 4 to 8, 2018, Marshall and Rogers were also able to observe the steps taken by Recife in implementing a sustainable and integrated urban approach to ensure green urbanisation patterns.

The Bartica Town Council, according to the statement, has been very proactive in its mandate to become a Green Town and advance the sustainable development of the municipality.

It is hoped that in the near future, through collaborative efforts, the municipality’s institutional, human resource and infrastructural capacity will be strengthened in keeping with its green agenda.
