GUYANESE living in the New York tri-state area on Sunday participated in the Guyana Independence Parade held in Brooklyn, New York.
The parade is part of the New York celebration of Guyana’s 52nd anniversary of Independence from June 3-16, 2018.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams; Georgetown Mayor Patricia Chase-Green; Mayor of Bartica, Gifford Marshall; and President of the Guyana Association of Municipalities, former Linden Mayor Carwyn Holland, all participated in the parade.
A contingent of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officers were also part of the celebrations. They were First Lieutenant Alvin Holladar, First Lieutenant Kaya Dover, Sergeant Dominic Percival, Sergeant Lawrence Douglas and Sergeant Lester Lewis.
The officers performed the ceremonial honours at the commemorative events along with Guyanese in the United States Armed Forces.
?Sunday’s parade, which saw a sizeable crowd, began at approximately 10:00hrs at Church and Brooklyn Avenues, Brooklyn, New York and proceeded west on Church Ave., north on Rogers Ave., west on President St. to Washington Ave., and concluded at the Brooklyn Museum.
A flag-raising ceremony and grand Unity Concert began at approximately 13:00hrs at the Brooklyn Museum Tarmac, Eastern Parkway and Washington Ave., Brooklyn.
The concert saw performances by a plethora of Guyanese artistes including Carib Soca Monarch Brandon Harding; chutney stars Terry Gajraj and Vicadi Singh; Soca stars Jumo Primo, Adrian Duchin, Blaze Antonio, Treyvon Vibez and Melissa Vanilla Roberts. Artistes Eddie Neblet, Saiku, Kapa Shanti, Lisa Punch, Jonnygo Figure, Nesta Nelson, Mod Stoney, Roger Hinds, Gaddie G, Gavin Mendonce, Anthony Allen and reggae superstar, Dexta Daps.
This year’s celebration is themed “Celebrate Guyana to the World”. The main sponsors of the event are Caribbean Airlines and Western Union.
