THE Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) yesterday announced the names of the shortlisted players for the CAC Games (Sevens), the Americas Rugby Challenge 15’s Championships, and the Rugby Americans (RAN) Sevens Championship, as they for a busy 2018 on the International stage.
The Men’s Rugby Sevens Team forms part of the Guyana Olympic Association GOA) Contingent to the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games, with the team set to depart July 29 for Barranquilla Colombia, playing in an eight team championship before returning August 4.
Guyana Men’s sevens team were 2010 CAC Champions and the only team sport at this level to date to have captured Gold for Guyana.
The shortlisted players are made up mainly of the RAN 2017 Finalists who lost to Jamaica in the final, will be without the services of three of its main players Rickford Cummings, Dominic Lespierre and Vallon Adams due to work commitments.
The President of the GRFU is expected to serve as Manager of the Team. Shortlisted players asked to report to Coach Adonis immediately are: Dwayne Schroeder (Captain), Richard Staglon (Vice-Captain), Claudius Butts, Patrick King, Avery Corbin, Peabo Hamilton, Ronald Mayers, Jamal Angus, Godfrey Broomes, Rondel McArthur, Osei McKenzie, Lancelot Adonis and Ryan Gonsalves.
AMERICAS RUGBY CHALLENGE
Guyana National 15’s team will take on arguably the biggest challenge in their history to date, participating in the newly formed Americas Rugby championships, featuring the top two teams from RAN (North) and SARS (South) with the aim of advancing towards promotion and participation in the top tier group featuring the likes of World ranked USA (15th) and Canada (21st) in the North and Argentina (8th), Uruguay (18th) and Chile (29th) in the South.
Guyana, ranked at 48th in the world, will play Paraguay (40th), Colombia (41st) and Mexico (54th), who were chosen over Trinidad and Tobago (52nd), over a one-week duration with rest period of three days apart on August 25, 29 and September 2.
With this in mind the National Selectors have released a long list of 53 players from whom the touring party of 29 will be selected.
Players listed are asked to report to Coach Kenneth Grant-Stuart and Assistant Coach Oslen Olivierre. Unlisted Players are welcome to present themselves for training and possible selection.
