AN inmate of the Lusignan Prison, who escaped from custody while performing duties at the home of a prison officer in April this year, was arrested on Monday afternoon at a mining camp at Water Dog Backdam, Potaro.

Deryck Oudkerk, age 22, and two other inmates of the Lusignan Prison were selected on April 8, 2018 to work at the home of a prison officer at Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara. At the time he was serving an 18-month prison term after he pleaded guilty to a charge of simple larceny.

Reports state that around 17: 00hrs on the day Oudkerk escaped, he had $300 in his possession. He made a dash for freedom and caught a Route 44 bus to the city.

Reports also state that the next day he caught another bus and travelled to Mahdia in Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni) then to Micobe Backdam. He later walked for several miles to Water Dog Backdam where he sought work at a mining camp.

The Guyana Prison Service investigation revealed that under standard operating procedures there are guidelines whereby prisoners are selected for labour. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
