… Federation Cup set for 2019

AFTER the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Ordinary Congress on Monday, it was revealed that plans for the implementation of the GFF’s ‘Federation Cup’ are on stream.

GFF president Wayne Forde, in a briefing, after the Congress noted; “We shared with the members (Executive Committee), the launch of the 2019 Federation Cup which will be played in August of 2019. During the Federation Cup there will be no other football played in Guyana, it will be our very own World Cup.

That is going to be a big project and we are hoping to make some specific announcements on the format, the timeline and everything. It is a tournament that will be played in August of each year.”

MEXICO VS GUYANA INVESTIGATION
In addition, another topic that was touched on was the updating of members of the ongoing investigation into the 2012 Mexico vs Guyana matter.

The Golden Jaguars had lost 3-1 to Mexico at the Azteca and local fans were anxious about their mouth-watering return game at the Guyana National Stadium during their historic run at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier, but the GFF sold the hosting rights for the game, which was then hosted at the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas on October 12, 2012.

It has been one of the biggest kept secrets in Guyana’s football since, and at the 2017 GFF Ordinary Congress, the affiliated members passed a motion which was unanimously supported, for the Executive Committee to thoroughly investigate how much money was made from the ‘shift’ and whether or not an agreement was made to pay the players a percentage of what was received from the deal.

On Monday, Forde pointed out that the Committee remains committed to resolving the matter. He also revealed that the work done by a consultant was shared with the members so that they can now appoint a Board of Inquiry.
