SEVEN months after being charged for trafficking heroin in her suitcase at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) at Timehri, a 21-year-old Canadian woman was freed on Monday.
Yuniyka Bovell was on trial before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly for the offence which alleged that on October 5, 2017 at CJIA she had 1.602 kilogrammes of diamorphine (heroin) in her possession for the purpose of trafficking. She denied the allegation.
This was reportedly the biggest heroin bust recorded in Guyana.
Bovell’s attorney Siand Dhurjon had made an application for the matter to be dismissed, since the Custom Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) prosecutor Konyo Sandiford, did not present the drug analyst’s report to the court.
Magistrates Daly discharged Bovell, ruling in favour of the attorney’s application.
According to reports, on the day in question the drugs were found hidden in the suitcase of the teen was as she was about to board a flight to Canada.
