Two jailed for separate marijuana possession offences

Police ranks  stationed in ‘E’ Division on Saturday encountered a three-acre cannabis field, two camps, a quantity of dried cannabis, along with dry ration and utensils at Ituni Road, Upper Demerara during an eradication exercise.

Reports are that Imtiaz “Sancho” Shaheed, 41, of La Grange, West Bank Demerara who was found tending to the illegal plants, was arrested and charged with cultivating a prohibited plant. The exhibits after samples obtained, was photographed and destroyed by fire.

Shaheed  appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Linden Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment and also fined $30,000.

Meanwhile ,Nickey Nermal of Lot 3, Melanie  Damishana, East Coast Demerara, was arrested and charged last Thursday with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking at Linden.

Last Thursday , an off-duty policeman who was a passenger in a Route 43 minibus in Linden, observed the suspicious of the man who was a passenger in the bus and who possessed a bulky 10kg rice bag.

Reports are that the Constable caused the vehicle to stop at the Amelia’s Ward Police Outpost where a search of the bag revealed two hundred and ninety-seven grams of compressed cannabis.

Nermal appeared before Magistrate  Clive Nurse at the Linden Magistrate’s Court on Monday  morning and pleaded guilty to the offence. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment and also fined $445,000.
