–34 road fatalities recorded for period January-April
While the there has been a 11.4% decrease in fatal accidents recorded at the end of April, 2018 as compared to the same period last year , speeding remains the main cause behind road fatalities in Guyana.
According to a release from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) , statistics for the period January-April this year indicate that serious, minor and damage accidents have also decreased by 13.3%, 44% and 25% respectively as compared to the same period last year.
The police said that 34 persons died following road accidents this year and of that figure 14 persons were pedestrians , while the others included pedal cyclists (6), occupants in cars (5), motorcyclists (5), passengers in minibuses (2) while one pillion rider and one driver died.
According to the police , a total of 29,064 road traffic offences were recorded for the year between January and April.
The police figures for the period April -January also indicates that there are a high number of motorists speeding on the roadways. According to the statistics , there were 6039 cases attributed to speeding on the country’s roadways.
It was noted that 2,445 cases were recorded of persons not wearing their seat belts while 1698 cases were listed for motorists who failed to confirm to road signs. The police figures also indicate that there were 1056 cases of tinted vehicles while 1002 cases were recorded of overloaded minibuses for the period in question.
“Once again, the Guyana Police Force wishes to publicly acknowledge the unwavering support it has been receiving from all sections of the society in the fight against crime which without a doubt is responsible for the reduction of serious crimes and all categories of road accidents,” the release stated.
