A TAXI driver has confessed to being among persons who robbed a Caledonia, East Bank Demerara (EBD) businesswoman of $5M on Monday and has helped investigators to retrieve some of the cash.

Reports indicate that the 33-year-old taxi driver of Supply, EBD, after being apprehended on Wednesday, admitted that he was an accomplice in the robbery and collected his share of the money.

He spent some and handed over $300,000 to police.
The suspect had earlier handed over $400,000 to his accomplice’s mother who resides at East La Penitence, Georgetown. Police visited the woman and conducted an interview and she admitted receiving the cash.

Police have since lodged the cash as investigations continue.
Initial reports revealed that the businesswoman is the co-owner of Rubis Gas Station, Soesdyke Public Road, EBD, and on Monday, she collected the cash from the gas station to deposit at a bank on the East Bank of Demerara.

She had the money in a haversack which she placed in the back seat of her black BMW motorcar and left the gas station in the company of a handyman.
On their way to the bank, she stopped in Caledonia, EBD, to drop off an invoice which she gave the handyman to deliver.

While she was waiting, she saw a man walking towards her car and within seconds, he opened the back door and grabbed the haversack with the cash and ran towards a waiting black and white Honda XR motorcycle which sped away.

The businesswoman followed the robbers into the Sarah-Johanna Cemetery where they abandoned the motorcycle. One of the robbers was later apprehended by public-spirited citizens.
