– calls for regional officials to work together

FORMER Member of Parliament under the People’s Progressive Party and old historian for Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) Isahack Basir has said that Region Two is transforming and has been moving forward in all sectors over the past years. Basir was at the time speaking at the opening of the Essequibo Chambers of Commerce Agro Trade Fair and Expo held recently at the Anna Regina Community Centre ground.

During his speech he spoke on the transformation that is currently taking place, especially in the Housing Schemes and the massive construction boom, “If one should take a drive along the Essequibo Coast, he or she would see the progress I am talking about. Over 300 new houses are under construction and not ordinary designs, but European,” Basir said.
The historian said that Region Two was a beautiful mecca of Guyana with over 26 historical sites, but political interference was destroying its beauty.

He called on both government and opposition officials to work in unison towards the region’s continued progress. He said that only those who were suffering from political blindness could not see what Region Two has achieved over the years, and explained that some political figures were suffering from environmental isolation.

“Those who boycott state activities are not true patriots, as a Guyanese and elected official you must feel part and parcel of the regional achievement,” Basir said. On that note, he urged Essequibians to work together and put aside political differences.

He said Essequibo had some of the most prestigious lakes which are natural spas. On a daily basis he said, families were affording to buy new vehicles and farmers are buying new tractors as well. He also boasted of the new state-of-the-art State House and the many recreational parks that were constructed under the present government.

“Don’t be left back, Essequibo is progressing from where it was. We have seen that. The region has great potential, everyone has a key responsibility to play, join hands and be part of the progress.” Basir called on all Essequibians to move away from the Cinderella mentality and to embrace progress for the transformation of the region.
