– to answer charges for shooting death of live-in partner
FORMER Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officer, Captain Orwain Sandy is expected to be placed before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today for the murder of his live-in girlfriend whom he allegedly shot to death last Saturday following a heated argument.
Sandy, who served as Special Assistant to the Army’s Chief-of-Staff, emptied his service weapon on Reona Payne in the vicinity of First Street, Alexander Village, Georgetown.
After committing the act, he surrendered to police at the Ruimveldt Police Station.
The police have confirmed that Sandy used his service revolver during the shooting. Police sources also related that the soldier had, on one occasion, lodged his firearm at the police station during a domestic dispute.
The Chief-of-Staff has ordered the Force’s Inspector-General to set up a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
And the GDF has sought to assure the public that Sandy’s action does not reflect the behaviour of other soldiers.
