NATIONAL Women’s table tennis champion Chelsea Edghill, who will miss Commonwealth Games duties due to scholastic commitments, was in great form when she played and won the Women’s singles and the 2200 Open rated event at the St Joseph Garden Open Table Tennis Championships
The 54th edition of the championships was played over the March 17-18 weekend at the Student Activities Center at Indiana University South Bend.
Edghill, seeded in Group 5 of the round-robin phase defeated Pawel Gluchowski by a 3-0 margin. She then suffered a setback in losing to Falchuck Igor by a 1-3 margin but came roaring back to take top in the group and maintain her number one seed in the group with a 3-0 win over Harrison Ngo.
In the quarterfinals she played and defeated Naresh Arcot by a 3-0 margin in the semifinals and Donald Hinshaw by a 3-2 margin in a thrilling five-game encounter.
In the final encounter with the title in sight she stepped it up another level to defeat Marty Stoner by a 3-1 margin to emerge the 2018 54th St Joseph Garden Open Table Tennis 2200 Rated champion.
She followed up her sterling performance in the Women’s event when she secured her second title of the championships winning the Women’s singles when she blanked Martina Kohatsu by a 3-0 margin
St Joseph Valley Open 2018 is one of the oldest running table tennis tournaments in the U.S.
