Dear Editor,
ONE notes with great concern the campaign known as “A Fair Deal for Guyana” which is behind the legal challenge to the Exxon PSA. A check of their Twitter posts includes the slogans: “#NIMBO Not In My Beautiful Ocean” and “Stop Oil Production in Guyana”. It seems clear then they want to go further and actually want NO DEAL AT ALL for Guyana?
This is a crucial moment in this country’s history. For decades, we have been abjectly poor and underdeveloped. Now oil is only two years away and it is no insignificant amount. If at some point Exxon alone reaches their projected output of 500,000 barrels per day, Guyana would from just one company be among the top five producers per capita in the world. Why should we turn our backs on this opportunity and be held hostage by environmental extremists, most of whom are already comfortably off.
The truth is, they don’t want Guyana to change and for the poor people to obtain a decent standard of living. To them, we say go swim with the jellyfish you claim to be saving as part of your radical campaign.
Yours sincerely,
Earl Hamilton
