TWENTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD Talesh Chattergoon, of Paradise Village on the Essequibo Coast was on Tuesday sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for manslaughter.

The decision was handed down by Justice Sandra Kurtzious at the Suddie High Court after the jury returned a guilty verdict following hours of deliberation.
Chattergoon was charged on May,12, 2015, for murder committed on 71-year-old Richard Ivan Etwaroo.
Etwaroo was discovered dead between May 6 and 7 at the Paradise sea dam. The matter was tried at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, and Chattergoon was not required to plead to the indictable charge of murder. The preliminary inquiry was then conducted in Essequibo before Magistrate Sunil Scarce. Six witnesses testified in the High Court trial, including two policemen, Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh and three civilians.
Justice Kurtzious accepted a plea of guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter and sentenced the youth to 20 years imprisonment.
