Prison officer on bail for narco-trafficking

PRISON OFFICER Jamal Carter, 26, was ordered to post $100,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to trafficking in narcotics and introducing prohibited items to the New Amsterdam Prison, where he was employed.

Bail was granted when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Alex Moore, at the New Amsterdam’s Court. He is expected to return to court on April 27, for fixture.
Reports revealed that on February 12, the prison officer allegedly walked out of the main prison yard and went into the lunch room. Moments later, he returned with a white food bowl, along with a coat in his arms.

When questioned, he said he had several packs of cigarettes which he intended to take into the yard for his brother, a prisoner.
A senior prison officer was informed and following a search, several packets of Pall Mall cigarettes were extracted from the white food bowl.

Also, a  plastic containing leaves, seeds and stems, confirmed to be cannabis sativa were also found  concealed at the bottom of the large food bowl.
The narcotics when weighed amounted to 528 grammes.
