A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) private is assisting police in Berbice with information following the discovery of 4lbs, 11 ozs of compressed marijuana in the trunk of a car, in the vicinity of the Berbice River Bridge on Friday night.
The soldier of Mocha Village, East Bank Demerara, was a passenger in the hire car travelling the Georgetown to New Amsterdam route when it was stopped at the Palmyra Village junction.
The driver, other occupants and car were searched and during the examination, the suspected trafficker claimed ownership of the grey haversack in which two black plastic bags were seen with seeds, leaves and stems, suspected to be cannabis sativa. The narcotic weighed 2137 grams.
While being questioned by police ranks, the 26-year-old claimed to have received the illegal plant from a former GDF rank and he was in the process of handing it over to a relative of the ex-soldier when he was arrested.
The soldier is in custody as police continue their investigation.
