GUYANA National Newspapers Limited (GNNL) freelance journalist, Frederick Halley, was last Friday night honoured for his more than three decades of service to the field, both in his homeland Guyana and his adopted country, Canada.

At a simple ceremony held at the Windies Sports Bar & Restaurant, Scarborough, Ontario, Halley was presented with a certificate, compliments of Tracy MacCharles, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Pickering-Scarborough East.
While the MPP was not on hand to present the prestigious award, the honour was done by Azeem Khan, president of the Ontario Masters Softball Cricket Clubs (OMSCC), the association responsible for recommending Halley for the citation.

The certificate from MacCharles read: “As the Member of Provincial Parliament for Pickering-Scarborough East, I am honoured to congratulate Frederick Halley on your contributions to sports journalism on behalf of the Ontario Masters Softball Cricket Clubs.
“For more than three decades, your work with the Guyana National Newspapers Limited and the Guyanese-Canadian community has brought prominence, recognition and professionalism to the sport of cricket and sports journalism.

“I would like to extend my warmest congratulations on this occasion. Thank you for your ongoing significant contributions to our community.”
Halley, who migrated to Canada in 2003, served as senior sports journalist at GNNL and was also the National Sports Commission (NSC) Sports Journalist of the Year in 1992. He was also the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) sports representative in Guyana.
