A 36-year-old taxi driver was on Wednesday sentenced to two years jail for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl.

Anansuaruddin Khan of Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara was found guilty of the offence after being on trial, in camera, before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.

Particulars of the charge read that between June 1 and June 30, 2017 at Georgetown, Khan sexually assaulted the under-age child.

He had initially pleaded guilty to the charge and was out on $150,000 bail during the trial.

But the case strongly stood on the evidence of the seven-year-old, who was described as ‘brave’ while she led her evidence behind closed doors against the perpetrator.

According to reports, the defendant was hired by the child’s mother to pick her up from school and drop her home daily. However, it is alleged that on one occasion when the child was in the car, the accused fondled her. The matter was reported to the police, after the child told her mother.
