A 31-year-old Venezuelan man was on Friday fined $50,000 by City Magistrate Judy Latchman for entering Guyana illegally.
Erick Jesus Guaregua confessed that on July 16 at Eterinbang, in the Cuyuni River, he entered Guyana by sea and disembarked without presenting himself to an immigration officer.
With the aid of an interpreter, the unrepresented man told the court that he came to Guyana because of the recession going on in his homeland.
According to reports, on November 22, the foreign national turned himself over to the police at the Providence Police Station after his friend, Ram Raymond, told him that he is wanted by the cops.
Magistrate Latchman ordered Guaregua to either pay a fine of $50,000 or spend weeks in prison.
He will be deported after paying his fine or serving his time.
