GBA/Pepsi third 2017 Under-16 tournament set for Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis Gym tomorrow

THE Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) third Under-16 tournament for 2017 will be staged tomorrow at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis Boxing Gym, Independence Boulevard beginning at 13:00hrs.

The tournament which is being sponsored by Demerara Distillers Limited under its Pepsi Brand has attracted the participation of seven boxing gyms from around the country and includes the recently formed savannah Boxing Gym from Rupununi, Region Nine, which will be represented by three pugilists.

The other gyms that have indicated their participation are Forgotten Youth Foundation, Harpy Eagles, Vergenoegen Boxing Gym and Rose Hall Jammers among others.
The recently formed Savannah Boxing Gym will be led by Kevin Tacoordeen and includes Julia Rodney and Troy Nero.
The Savannah Boxing Gym is the brainchild of Minister of National Cohesion, Dr George Norton who also has responsibility for Sport.

Minister Norton personally ensured the gym has a coach who is dedicated to the sport and in this regard, he used his office to have boxing coach Orlando go into Region Nine and coach the boxers over a period of time.
Meanwhile, the GBA National Open Championships will run from November 27 to 30 and will be held at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, beginning at 19:30hrs each night.

Over 10 boxing gyms have indicated an interest in participating.
Among the fighters expected to reassert their dominance in the amateur arena are; Jason Barker of the Guyana Defence Force who holds the heavyweight title, Dennis Thomas of the Guyana Police Force who is the defending middleweight champion, GDF’s Colin Lewis (junior welterweight champion), Clairmont Gibson of the GDF who is the bantamweight champion and Markember Pierre also of the GDF, who is the National and Caribbean middleweight champion.
