… Jonathan Carter hits century for Barbados Pride

DESPITE significant interruption by rain, the Jamaica Scorpions still had to dig deep to avoid losing on the final day of their Windies Professional Cricket League 4Day game against the Barbados Pride at Sabina Park on Sunday.

Batting first, the Scorpions were skittled out amid a few rain interruptions for 176, before being plundered by the Pride, who scored 304-7 declared. Batting a second time, the Scorpions made it to 98-6 before play ended on Sunday, still 30 runs away from making their opponents bat again.

The Scorpions were first undone by Kevin Stoute’s 4-58, and Ashley Nurse’s 3-52, before Jonathan Carter’s century put them under severe pressure.
Carter, 103, was well supported by Shayne Moseley, 50, Shamarh Brooks, 48, and Nurse, 34, as the Pride racked up an imposing 128-run lead.

That lead, on the final day, could have meant disaster for the Scorpions, who were pegged back by Jomel Warrican, 3-22. Nurse, 1-40, Justin Greaves, 1-15, and Stoute, 1-2, also posed problems for the Scorpions in their bid to hang on for a draw.

Stand-in skipper, Paul Palmer Jr, was the man who provided the fight for the Scorpions, scoring a patient 32 from 115. He was supported by Derval Green, who scored 8 from 28 deliveries to ensure the Scorpions did not lose.
