GBA to stage National U-16 and Open championships this month

THE Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) will this month stage its National U-16 and National Open Championships at two venues in Georgetown.

On November 18, Under-16 boxers will take to the `square jungle’ situated at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis’ Gym, Albouystown from 13:30hrs and it is anticipated that over 38 boxers from 10 gyms will compete for honours.
From November 27 to 30, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will be looking to make a successful defence of their Open Champion Gym title which they have won for 15 consecutive years.

This year’s activity will be held at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue from 19:00hrs each night with 10 bouts carded every night.

Over 40 boxers from 10 gyms are expected to showcase their talent. Among the fighters expected to reassert their dominance in the amateur arena are GDF’s 2016 champions Jason Barker (heavyweight), Colin Lewis (junior welterweight), Clairmont Gibson (bantamweight), Markember Pierre (light heavyweight), Desmond Amsterdam (Guyana and Caribbean lightweight champion), as well as Joel Williamson of Rose Hall Jammers (lightweight) and Guyana Police Force’s Dennis Thomas (middleweight).
