THE Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL) on Tuesday, October 31, made a presentation to the Alness Nursery School and the Lower Corentyne Secondary School in an effort to promote literacy and reading.

Alness Nursery was the recipient of a flat screen television set and DVD player to assist the school to show learning videos such as phonics, reading, colours and counting to students.

Assistant Senior Mistress of the school,Judy Smart, expressed gratitude to the Chronicle and promised to utilise it for its intended purpose .She explained that the school was in need and as such, they reached out to Mr.Foster who was more than willing to assist.
Director of GNNL, Hilbert Foster, during the simple handing-over ceremony, encouraged teachers , parents and students to make good use of the equipment as it will play a part in development of the students. At the same time, he encouraged teachers to buy and read the Guyana Chronicle. He said from the past the Chronicle has evolved, making way for a more neutral media outlet.

Meanwhile , the Lower Corentyne Secondary received the first set of newspapers distributed to schools in the region.
The papers will be added to the school’s library and distributed to students to encourage reading:
Foster remarked that the Chronicle has committed to distributing the newspapers to schools on a monthly basis, while noting that both secondary and primary schools will be targeted.

“ We want for children to read more, enjoy reading , if you want to learn about the country and what is happening on a daily basis, reading the newspapers is the best start. We know that reading builds vocabulary ,fluency and knowledge, so this is us doing our way in promoting and encouraging independent reading across the schools.”
HeadMistress(Ag) of the LCSS, Sharon Hawks thanked the GNNL for the donation.
