THE Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) Chamber of Commerce and Industry feels that the establishment of a packaging facility by the Government in the region will significantly boost its economic development.
The view was recently expressed by President of the Chamber Mr. Imran Sacoor, who pointed to some statistics of agricultural production in the region which highlights its contribution to the national economy.
He noted that Region Five produces approximately 40% of the rice grown in Guyana; 30% of the fish produced in Guyana;15% of the sugar and 35% of the dairy products.
He added: “ If you look at the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables that we produce we can feed the entire Guyana. We need to stop thinking about Guyana being the bread basket and actually make that a reality. This can be done in Region Five if government gives us the support.”
He added that the region would make optimum use of support by central government and mentioned specifically the packaging facility as a badly needed tangible form of support for the region. “We made that call before for a government-provided packaging facility for Region Five and we are making that call again,” he said.
