THE inquest into the killing of ‘C’ Field, Sophia resident, Isaiah Marques, who was shot by a licensed firearm holder in a failed robbery attempt in front of Club Monaco in 2016, commenced on Thursday.

The proceeding is being heard before City Magistrate Judy Latchman and a four member jury to determine whether the licensed firearm holder, Carl Haynes, is criminally responsible for Marques’ death.

According to reports on February 29, 2016 about 02:00hrs Carl Haynes, was walking along Second Street, Campbellville, accompanied a group of persons after they had just come out of Club Monaco. However, they were held up by Marques, who was armed with a gun. They resisted and the armed man pulled the trigger of his weapon, but the gun snapped. As such, Haynes pulled out his service firearm and shot Marques to his forehead.

The unlicensed .32 revolver has been recovered on Marques. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Taking to the witness stand on Thursday was Traffic Officer, Corporal Leon Rose, who was on mobile patrol on the day in question and went to the crime scene. According to Constable Rose, when he went to the crime scene a large crowd had already gathered and he saw a male Negro lying on the ground with a hole to his head.

The witness further explained that he was told by someone in the crowd that the said male (Marques) was shot by another male (Haynes). Another witness, who took to the stands was Police Officer, Dhankumar Dalloo, told the court that he at the time was stationed at Brickman Police Station when he received information that someone was shot at the vicinity of Club Monaco.

Officer Dalloo said that based upon that report he went to the said location where he learnt that a male Negro (Haynes) and friends were coming out from Club Monaco and went into the parking lot when they were approached by a man with a gun.

The witness pointed out that Haynes was clad in his gold jewelries when the man approached and pulled out a firearm to rob him.

However Haynes was armed and pulled out his firearm and shot the alleged perpetrator to his head. Officer Dalloo told the court that he had taken Haynes to the Kitty Police Station.

The Inquest is adjourned until September 13.
