A 27-year-old Port Kaituma miner was on Wednesday fined $70,000 by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for allegedly stabbing his reputed wife after accusing her of cheating.
Theophilus Anthony admitted that on August 26, 2017 at 18 Mile Backdam, Arakaka, North West District, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Shonette James.
According to the prosecution’s facts, Anthony and James are reputed husband and wife and lived at Barama River, but the couple work together at a mining camp at 18 Mile Backdam, Arakaka.
However on the day in question around 19:00hrs, the woman went to have a bath at a nearby creek leaving her reputed husband at the campsite. he was intoxicated from drinking ‘brown rum’ with his friends.
Upon James’s return, Anthony accused the woman of cheating on him, pulled out a knife and stabbed her to the abdomen. The injured woman was taken to Arakaka medical centre and the accused was arrested by the police. The magistrate ordered Anthony to pay a fine of $70,000 or default three months imprisonment.
