INMATES of the Lusignan Prison on the East Coast of Demerara have reportedly apologised to their wardens for their indisciplined and disturbing behaviour on Friday, which led to 18 of their fellow inmates being injured.

Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels, told members of the media on Saturday that despite the unrest, prison staff as well as other members of the Joint Services reported for duty at the tarmacked facility within the perimeter of the prison where the incident occurred.
“They were greeted by prisoners from the three holding areas, and were offered an apology for their actions last night,” Samuels said, adding:

“They thanked the officers for not directing shots at them last night, even though they had misbehaved.”

According to Samuels, the contrite prisoners later handed over 33 improvised weapons they’d made from various materials that were used to construct the holding area.
Samuels said that in spite of this show of remorse, prison officials will continue to maintain security at the prisons by remaining vigilant, and cautioned their charges about the consequences of damaging government property.
Prison officers were also advised, Samuels said, to remain on high alert and not to be taken in by the offer of an apology.

According to reports, several prisoners in Holding Bay 2 had scaled a fence and entered Holding Bay 1 with the stated intention of harming a fellow prisoner whom they reportedly felt was a “snitch.”
In the ensuing chaos, prison authorities reportedly fired shots in the air in an attempt to restore order.

And while no prisoner was harmed by the firing of shots into the air, 18 of them were injured, presumably by the razor-sharp security wire atop the fence as they attempted to get to their quarry.

Five of them were sent to the Georgetown Public Hospital to be treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries inflicted by the wire.
The targeted prisoner was unharmed, and has since been placed in the main holding area of the Lusignan Prison.
