THE Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) has joined forces with Buddy’s Gym, located on Sheriff Street to allow the Guyana team unbridled access to the gym facilities ahead of the Pan American Indoor Championships.
During a brief ceremony on Saturday at the Gym, President Philip Fernandes collected membership cards from the representative of the Gym for both the male and female teams to utilize the venue for the next six months.

Speaking to the media, Fernandes said,” I think this is a very important occurrence for the Guyana National Hockey team. In the past, we have tried our best to prepare teams with the limited resources that we’ve had and we’ve had our challenges.
“Preparing a top hockey team requires a lot of different aspects, not just technical and tactical training but also psychological competence and also speed, endurance training, strength, all these different things.”

He noted that this time around, the partnership means that the teams will now take their endurance levels to greater levels than they have in the past, adding the GHB sees the sponsorship as an important one in forging champion teams.
The teams have no easy task as they face several first world teams including the United States, Canada and Uruguay. Fernandes is aware of this but also underscored the importance of having a high quality facility to train at.

Meanwhile, coach of the team, Dwayne Scott stated, “There’s a lot that goes into this. The contribution itself we cannot be anymore grateful for it and it will definitely help us to prepare mentally and physically for this tournament.”
Guyana will come face to face with the best in the Western Hemisphere when they host the Pan American Indoor championships in October of this year. Apart from the US and Canada, Mexico, Barbados, Argentina and Trinidad and Tobago are in the Mens draw. Uruguay will send a female team.
