Editor’s note

One of the badges of pride of our country is its multi-cultural composition and- despite the global debate of cultural appropriation- our determination to celebrate our diversities rather than to create divisions.

Among those diversities, are the national holidays that honour those various cultures; and provide a time for reflection and indulgence, not just for one race, but for the country as a whole. With Emancipation Day just around the corner, this week’s Pepperpot gives a soft introduction to the event by telling stories that are rich with history, as well as insightful information that can be appreciated by all. Some of those stories feature the 175 year old legacy of the St Bartholomew Anglican Church and its rich African roots, to the role that Queenstown, Essequibo has played in the African Village Movement.

We also look at the importance of drumming to the African heritage and how stakeholders are clamouring to ensure that the tradition is passed on to youth, thereby breaking down stigmas that have, long, been attached to the practice. Indeed, even as we prepare to remember our ancestors and celebrate and appreciate the concept of freedom, we further reflect on the scars left by slavery and ways in which we can work to overcome it. All these are mixed in with other engaging stories aimed at adding enrichment to your Sunday reading. We hope that you enjoy this week’s edition.
