Accused cellphone thief gets bail

A TWENTY-two-year-old man was on Wednesday placed on $50,000 bail by Magistrate Sunil Scarce on a charge of robbery.
It is alleged that on July 16, 2017, Jamal Henry of Diamond, East Bank Demerara, robbed Anil Ganie of one cellular phone valued $13,000.
Henry who had a prior matter in court, pleaded not guilty to the offence. Police Prosecutor Adoni Innis objected to bail due to the prevalence of the offence and requested that Henry be remanded into police custody.
The accused stated, “me aint steal nothing, me and me friends dem been making joke and I took away he (Ganie) phone.” Henry also indicated that he had given the phone back to the victim’s family later on.
According to the Prosecutor, Ganie was at the game shop when Henry held on to his collar and started shaking him up, then proceeded to take his phone away which he handed to someone else. The accused man is expected to make his next court appearance on July 28, 2017.
