Rape accused freed

A 12-member jury on Friday found Julius Tejowah not guilty of the rape of a child under the age of 16 years, after hours of deliberation in the Georgetown High Court.

After the verdict was announced, Justice Navindra Singh told Tejowah he was free to go after which he exited the courtroom surrounded by his spouse and other relatives.

At the time of the incident, Tejowah was 20 years and the female child was only 13 years old and resided in the same yard as him, in the county of Demerara. It was alleged that Tejowah engaged in sexual penetration of a child under 16 years on July 31, 2015. The state was represented by Tuanna Hardy, Tameika Clarke and Seeta Bishundyal while attorney Maxwell McKay represented the accused. The state called eight witnesses to take the stand in the matter which was held in-camera.
