GUYANA will play rivals Trinidad and Tobago tomorrow at the St Stanislaus College ground, as they look to defend their Rugby Americas North (RAN) South Zone title – a title they won last year against the ‘Soca Ruggers’ in the Twin Island Republic.
Guyana ruggers are acknowledged by many as the most feared Rugby team in the Caribbean, more so in the game’s shortest version – sevens.
However, in the 15s format, they have made some historical strides, with their victory 30-27 against the USA (South) in 2014 to win their maiden NACRA (now known as RAN) 15s title in Atlanta being their biggest achievement yet.

In both 7s and 15s, Trinidad remain Guyana’s toughest opposition and while Guyana did defeat them 23-18 last year to win their RAN South Zone 15s title, team captain Ryan Gonsalaves is anticipating an even tougher match-up this time around.
With a clash against Mexico (RAN’s North Zone Champions) on the horizon, Rodrigues believes that a day of ‘perfect rugby’ is needed if they are to overcome their nemesis.
Meanwhile, the game will be played at unfamiliar territory since the National Park, the usual battleground for the Green Machine, is unplayable for international matches, owing to the inclement weather.

Nonetheless, the Green Machine captain believes that his men are more than ready for the battle ahead and urged all Guyanese to rally behind the side.
Banks DIH, a long-time supporter of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), yesterday announced their partnership with the Union through their world-famous Banks Beer brand, for tomorrow’s clash.
Communications Manager Troy Peters pointed out that the company is more than happy to continue their alliance with the GRFU and also made a call for the public to support the team. Kick-off time is 16:00hrs.
