A 41-year-old Mahaica businessman and his wife are among 17 persons arrested on Saturday for various offences, among them unlawful possession of a firearm, bribing the police, and trafficking in narcotics.
According to the police, the businessman, of Helena #1, was arrested on Saturday night with an unlicensed .32 pistol and 50 matching rounds, and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition.
Reports are that acting on a tip-off, police ranks swooped down on the suspect’s home at around 22:55hrs and conducted a search, during which the illegal weapon and ammunition were found in his bedroom

Shortly thereafter, the suspect’s 40-year-old wife went to the Mahaica Police Station and offered a bribe of $525,000 to one of the investigating ranks to forego the charges against her husband. She, too, has since been arrested, and the money lodged with the police. Both husband and wife are being processed for court.
Meanwhile, several operations carried out in ‘C’ Division (East Coast Demerara) on Saturday have resulted in 15 other persons being arrested, including a 49-year-old for trafficking in narcotics, and the seizure of four motorcycles suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.
Saturday also saw a resident of Goedverwagting being arrested and taken into custody for the unlawful possession of a firearm.
Police, acting on information, went to the Stabroek Market in the vicinity of the Digicel outlet around 15:30hrs and conducted a search on the 21-year-old construction worker and found an unlicensed .38 revolver without ammunition on his person. He is being processed for court.
