Man remanded for allegedly beating mother

A MAN who was allegedly seen beating his mother and had to be overpowered by a neighbour, has been remanded to prison by Magistrate Alex Moore at the New Amsterdam Court on Wednesday.
Prosecutor, Corporal Winston Poliah said that on April 21, 2017, Jairam Goordat of Number Two Village, East Canje, had an argument with his mother,Brijwati Ramkrisoon over money, which the elderly woman did not give him.
Due to his constant annoying pleas, the pensioner pushed him away and he in turn pushed her, before hitting her about the body. Their neighbour, Moorram Narsooh was at his home when he heard the woman screaming for help, and ran to investigate and saw the defendant beating his mother.
Armed with a piece of wood, he inflicted a lash on Goordat’s right arm, injuring him. The injured man was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted but soon after discharged.
Narsooh was placed on $35,000 bail while the elderly woman has since refused to give a statement, claiming that the slaps that her son gave her were all jokes. The matter is fixed for hearing on May 19, 2017.
