CITING personal reasons and steadfastly denying any possible hidden reasons, treasurer of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Niall Stanton, resigned from the post to which he was elected last January.
The resignation has been in effect since February, and according to another AAG executive, Citizens Bank Senior Manager Kwabina Griffith has taken over the post since March.
When contacted yesterday, Stanton confirmed the resignation noting, however, that he remains on several committees for the AAG, including the committee organising the upcoming South American Junior Championships set to be held in Guyana in June.
“No I am not (the Treasurer). I’m just on the technical committee, the finance committee, I would do a little PR every now and then for them, and I’m on the committee that is planning the South American Championships here, and that’s basically it,” Stanton explained.
He went on to resolutely deny any claims that he may have resigned for clandestine reasons. Another section of the media had reported sources who claimed that Stanton’s resignation had been “more than what it seems on the surface” and that the AAG was keeping the resignation on quiet so as to not draw attention that anything was amiss.
Stanton, however, says the resignation has never been a secret and he doesn’t know why persons would want to infer that he had other reasons to resign.
“Honestly I don’t know where people getting that idea from, and running away with these different things,” Stanton remarked.
“I must say, though, that I have left the financial statement in a very good position.”
