Zorg ground to host Simon’s Memorial cricket competition

A GRAND day of cricket matches will feature on Sunday, April 30, at the Zorg ground in South Essequibo, four male teams namely Invaders Masters, Wild Oats, Zorg SC and Simon’s XI. They will compete for cash incentives and trophies.
In addition, a female exhibition match between Capoey All Stars and Zorg SC will be played in memory of Leyland Simon, Elvis Simon, Carlton Simon and Steffon Simon, all of whom were ardent supporters of the sport and who had contributed significantly towards uplifting the standard of the game, especially in Zorg on the Essequibo Coast.

The male cricket will be a 10/10 softball knock-out affair while the female players will pad up and engage in a 15-overs hard ball match.
According to organiser Trevis Simon, the activities have been undertaken by relatives as a tribute to the deceased and in recognition of their passion for the game and their association in promoting community development.
He further disclosed that the event will become an annual feature which will seek to further promote and develop sports in the village as well as to harmonise the community and build healthier relationships among the villagers.

The games will begin at 09:00hrs and will attract over $100 000 and trophies as prizes for the respective winners.
Meanwhile some of the players will be former national T20 all-rounder Ramesh Narine, former national Under-19 batsmen Delon Heyliger and Vijay Surujpaul, along with former Essequibo Inter-county batsmen Dinesh Joseph, Rovendra Parasram, Narendra Mandolall and Latchmikhant Narine.

Essequibo coach Forbes Daniels will also form part of the proceedings along with a special appearance from Regional Chairman Devanand Ramdatt who will give brief remarks and donate a trophy as well.
The event will be attended by relatives and friends of the deceased and they will observe a minute’s silence, prior to the commencement of the anticipated exciting day of sports.
