GUYANA was still in the running for the boys’ under-18 title up to late last night when they face off against the Dominica Republic in the semifinals. However, the Guyana girls under-15 team had already picked up the silver when competition commenced in the Caribbean Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships being played here in Guyana at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The local boys under-15 finished with bronze, while the girls under-18 team shared a joint third with the Jamaican team. It was only in the boys under-18 where our fate remains uncertain when Guyana come up against the Dominican Republic side.
But things were not looking bright for the Guyana side as the night advanced. Both Kyle Eghill and Elisha Johnson had suffered losses in the team’s first two semifinal matches.
Edghill went under 3 – 0 against Mariano Lockward, and Johnson followed with 3 – 2 lost to Carlos Guzman. It was all down to Miguel Wong to keep the team in the game.
The boys’ semifinal matches followed the team’s afternoon quarter final win against Aruba.
Johnson came out really big picking up two matches, and Nickolus Romain took one, to avenge an opening lost for Kyle Eghill against Jeandry Mathilda. Edghill lost 10 – 12, 8 – 11, 7 – 11.
But Johnson quickly equalized for Guyana by overwhelming Jean Claude Hoek 11 -9, 11 -7, 11 – 2. Romain then took Guyana one up by beating Donald Yarzagaray 11 – 5, 11 – 9, 9 – 11, 11 – 6
Johnson returned this time to deal Mathilda a whipping. He finished him off 13 – 11, 11 – 8, 11 – 6.
In the girls under-15 it was the team of Abigail Martin, Neveah Clarkston and Selenas Jackman that lead Guyana to the silver after succeeding 3 – 1 against Jamaica, despite a 0 – 3 lost against Dominican Republic.
