COMPETITION in four of the eight categories in the Toucan Industries Junior Skills level squash tournament commenced last Monday night at the Georgetown Club, and Madison

Fernandes, Kirsten Gomes, and Abosaide Cadogan were among those who ensured they picked up early wins in the tournament.

The trio all played in category ‘C’, where Gomes and Cadogan managed to dispose of their competitors in straight sets wins.
It was a tough first set for Cadogan, who ultimately overcame Lucas Jonas. The Caribbean junior bronze medallist barely hung on to win in the first set which she took 15-13. However, it was easy sailing afterwards as she breezed through 11-1, 11-2 in the next two sets.
Gomes dealt Dominic Collins his first loss in the round-robin competition. She commanded the match from the word go and collected her win 11-6, 11-3, 11-0.

But it was Fernandes who had a very difficult time, when as she tried to keep Aliyah Persaud at bay. Persaud held her off enough to dominate the first set 11-7, but Fernandes came back hitting hard to sweep the next three sets 11-8, 11-7, 11-8.
Other wins of the evening were Louis Da Silva against Nathan Rahaman (11-9, 7 -11, 11-1, 11-7) in the only category ‘D’ match of the night and Shiloh Asregado over Liam Carpenter (15-13, 4-11, 12-10) in category ‘E’.

In category ‘H’ Javed Saul took down Grant Fernandes 11-4, 11-9, and Joshua Verway beat Noah Rahaman 11-5, 14-12.
Matches continued at the same venue last evening from 18:00hrs. (Tamica Garnett)
