THE Natural Resources Ministry has confirmed the death of a Brazilian in a mining accident at Micobie, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) on Friday evening.
Though not identified up to press time, the ministry in a statement said that the man was a worker attached to a six-inch dredge, which was said to be operating without permission from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
“Investigations revealed that the Micobie Village Council granted permission for the operation without informing or consulting the GGMC prior to doing so,” the statement said.
The ministry noted that GGMC personnel are on the ground conducting preliminary investigations and that the name of the deceased will be released by the authorities in due course.
“The Ministry of Natural Resources expresses its sorrow and regret at this latest mining fatality and recommits to working with miners, and Amerindian titled communities to make the industry safe, accident-free and better regulated,” the ministry’s statement concluded.
