THE landing gear of an Air Services Limited (ASL) Cessna 172 broke on landing at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 1230hrs.
Reports are that the female student pilot was conducting a “solo” flight on the Cessna Skyhawk aircraft bearing registration 8R-AFS when the incident occurred on Runway 11; this is the secondary runway at the airport. Rescue operations commenced immediately.
There were no reports of injuries. The incident is being investigated by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Reports are that in November 2013, a man ran into the path of an aircraft when it was on the verge of landing on the airstrip at Kwakwani. The pilot took evasive action. However, the wing of the aircraft was damaged during the incident.
