Investigation launched into ASP’s alleged assault of junior ranks

POLICE Commissioner (ag), David Ramnarine, has ordered that an investigation be launched into the alleged assault of three constables under the command of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), which occurred on Tuesday night.

On Friday, Ramnarine described the incident, which occurred at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU), involving the senior and junior ranks as an “ugly matter.”
It has been reported that on Tuesday night, the ASP, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, ordered the junior ranks to get dressed for an impromptu drill.

The junior ranks protested as their uniforms, at the time did not confirm with the required standards prescribed by the Force’s regulations. As a result of the objection made by the junior ranks, the ASP allegedly cursed and physically manhandled the ranks.

The entire incident was reportedly recorded by colleagues of those involved in the incident.

“Firstly I want to thank the media that called to draw my attention [to] that ugly matter. The very morning I caused two of my colleagues (Assistant Commissioners) to go to TSU. They were able to confirm that something happened there,” said the acting Police Commissioner.

Ramnarine disclosed that the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has been tasked with investigating the matter. The ‘Top Cop’ could not state whether the ASP was involved in similar incidents in the past.
