Guyana’s premier cyclists battle in second leg of Cheddi Jagan Memorial road race

GUYANA premier cyclists will be in action tomorrow as the 20th Annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial Cycle Road Race pedals off in the West Demerara area, beginning at 08:00hrs from outside the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara.After being sent on their way, the participants will journey to Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo before returning to finish at Schoonord near the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
The event was not staged in the West Demerara area last year because of unforeseen circumstances.
However in 2015, Hamza Eastman won the 50-mile event in a time of one hour 54 minutes 50 seconds.
Christopher Griffith was first to cross the finish line in the Junior category, while Junior Niles won the Veterans Under-50 years category. Deoraj Garbarran was the winner of the Mountain Bike category and Anthony Farriah was the winner of the Veterans Over-60 years.
Come tomorrow, the first six finishers will be rewarded for their efforts as well as the first three juniors, the first three veterans Under-50, the first three females and the first Over-60.
The event is being sponsored by the People’s Progressive Party’s Vreed-en-Hoop District Group in Region Three.
The event’s organiser is Hassan Mohamed and this will be the eighth year that the event will be staged in the West Demerara area.
Meanwhile, the 20th Memorial of the late former President Cheddi Jagan is expected to conclude on Sunday (19th) along the Essequibo Coast
