Elderly man accused of stealing truck

CITY magistrate Judy Latchman on Monday remanded a North Ruimveldt man after he was charged with simple larceny and appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.Norman Phillips of Nutmeg Street, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to the allegation, which stated that between October 1 and 31, 2016 in Georgetown, he stole one Bedford truck worth $1,000,000; one winch valued $1,000,000; one battery worth $20,000 and a quality of wares valued $40,000, property of Aubrey Barnwell.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Shawn Gonzales, opposed bail being granted to the man, citing the seriousness of the offence, its prevalence in society, the penalty attached to the charge and the value of the articles. According to Gonzales, the 62-year old Phillips also admitted that he had been charged and placed on bail for a matter of a similar nature. Phillips was remanded until March 20, 2017.
