EARLY morning rains on Thursday resulted in flooding in some areas of Georgetown but the water drained off quickly, allowing for persons to take to the streets for the traditional Mashramani celebrations. Some of the places that were affected include, Queenstown, Campbellville, Newtown Kitty, Ruimveldt and Alberttown. A few villages on East Coast Demerara were also affected.
Speaking to Guyana Chronicle, residents mainly of South Ruimveldt explained that they have been affected by flooding over the years, noting that even with little rain, their yards flood.
“We really need better drainage in this area because whole year we does be affected when rain fall… sometimes we does suffer huge losses and don’t even be compensated for what we lost,” said one concerned resident.
Meanwhile, the hydromet office has indicated that yesterday’s level of rainfall was recorded between 15.0 mm and 40.0 mm and predicted more rain over the weekend.
