Gossai family tied up, beaten & robbed by gunmen

Five gun-toting bandits attacked the proprietors of R. Gossai Liquor Store at Bagotstown on the East Bank of Demerara Monday night and escaped with the day’s sales as well as a quantity of United States currency.

According to Phylis Gossai, around 20:00h, her son was leaving their home at Lot 25 Public Road Bagostown when he was grabbed by the men who were hiding in the family’s yard.

The men tied up her son and entered the family’s house while demanding money. The woman’s husband, Rabindranauth Gossai, who was in the backyard when the men entered the house, was later beaten by the gunmen as they demanded cash and jewellery.

The unmasked men escaped with US$5,000 and the day’s sales along with a quantity of jewellery.  Mr Gossai sustained cuts to his head after he was gun-butted by one of the men and he was subsequently hospitalised.

The man’s wife expressed frustration at the brazen incident as she noted the frequency of thefts the family has experienced over the years.  Police revisited the scene on Tuesday morning as the lawmen investigate the brazen robbery.
