–Sport Director promises National Park ‘facelift’

PEPSI Hornets were too hot to handle on the field of play as they carted off the Inaugural Guinness VII’s rugby championships Saturday night last at the National Park field.

The Pepsi side outclassed their Yamaha Caribs counterparts, as they put them down 29-10 in the decider, running the tournament undefeated by disposing of the Police Falcons and the Guyana Defence Force among others.

Playing like a well-oiled machine, the Hornets were heavily dependent on Elwyn Chase, who produced a hat -trick of tries and was eventually rewarded with the tournament MVP award for the male division.

Support also came from Ronald Mayers (two tries), Ryan Hickson and Ryan Gonsalves.

GDF secured the third place in the men’s category when they defeated Police Falcons 19-nil while on the distaff end, the Pepsi ladies also took home their title having disposed of the Yamaha Caribs.

According to Hornet’s captain Gonsalves, “It was not easy, but we took it one game at a time and we tried to play each game the right way. The guys played well today and we stuck to the coach’s game plan, kudos to the guys.”

President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Peter Green, Director of Sport, Christopher Jones along with Banks DIH Guinness Brand Manager, Lee Baptiste all congratulated the team, adding that the tournament had lived up to its billing.

Meanwhile, following the conclusion of the event, Jones added, “ the National Sports Commission (NSC) will be resurfacing and raising the playing area”, adding that the addition of lights will also be done.
