A TAXI driver of Linden, Devon Best, was on Tuesday fined after he was found guilty of beating his ex-girlfriend. The case was heard at the Christianburg Magistrates Court. The unrepresented, 31-year-old Best, of Retrieve, Linden, was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Candacy English on the 6th August, 2016, at her Cinderella City Amelia’s Ward home.
The court heard that Best broke and entered the home of English and assaulted her, after which she made a report at the Amelia’s Ward outpost. In his defence, Best told the court that he never assaulted English, but rather they had an argument over a damaged cellphone, which they settled at the station. He claimed that three weeks after, he was apprehended for the same incident, but was now told that he had assaulted her. The prosecutor told Best that he had concocted the story to redirect the court’s attention to an incident concerning the cellphone which occurred since April. Magistrate Clive Nurse said he does not believe his story and that the evidence before the court shows that he indeed assaulted English. Best then pleaded with the court for leniency, stating that his reputed wife is eight months pregnant and that he has three other children. He was then fined $10, 000 or four weeks in prison.
