A MOCO-MOCO farmer and his reputed wife were on Tuesday released on $200,000 bail each by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, in relation to three kilos of cannabis sativa that was allegedly found in their home during a police raid.
Louis Cupertin, a 29-year-old farmer and his reputed wife, Felicia Mandokin, 18, were jointly charged for having the cannabis in their possession on January 27 at Moco- Moco Village, Central Rupununi, for the purpose of trafficking.
The couple denied the charge. Their lawyer Jerome Khan in his application for bail explained that the police carried out a raid in the village in search of Cupertin’s brother, Roland.
He added that Ronald had earlier visited the home and left a bag, saying he would return in a couple of days. Cupertin did not however check to see what was inside.
Khan told the court that police ranks later on January, 27, carried out a raid, unearthing the narcotics in the bag. He also pointed out that the man’s wife had told the same story when held by the police.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones in his facts to the court explained that on the day in question police, acting on a ‘tip-off,’ went to the couple’s home and carried out a search finding the illicit drug in the process.
Jones further pointed out that Cupertin, under caution by the police, explained that it was his brother that had left the drugs at his home.
The Chief Magistrate put the couple on $200,000 each and had the matter transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for March 2.
